Kine Per week said “The sturdy ‘crooks slip out’ try peopled which have a colorful variety off crucial and you will arresting letters, that, skilfully manipulated of the writer and you will director, enable the motion picture so you can tread liquids effortlessly. It is merely toward end which actually starts to falter, nevertheless smack-right up finale rescues they regarding ‘red’. Admirably staged and you will intelligently dialogued, it’ll have zero higher difficulties for the living off its very ugly identity.” [ 8 ]
Monthly Movie Bulletin said “The film motions on a fast speed, the new talk are smooth and you may characterisations fundamentally productive. Knob Powell and Evelyn Keyes head the latest throw skillfully, because investigator is played with big aplomb by the that individual identity, Lee J. Cobb.” [ 9 ]
Richard Brody throughout the The fresh new Yorker listed “That it terse and you may taut movie noir was centered on brand new close and you will elite group issues of your own term profile, the fresh new violent genius (played by Knob Powell) about a posh unlawful gambling establishment. This new film’s blogger and you will movie director, Robert Rossen, creates a multidimensional chess video game, to have mortal stakes, between Johnny, their workplace (Thomas Gomez), his boss’s wife (Ellen Drew), a beneficial cagey police inspector (Lee J. Cobb), and you may good scuffling celebrity (Evelyn Keyes) whoever sis (Nina Foch) worked on gambling enterprise and you may dated a good corrupt detective (Jim Bannon). This new caustically epigrammatic script, the fresh new cast’s suavely managed body language away from like and you will threat, and you may Rossen’s thrillingly controlled and stylishly cocky photo (in addition to their governmental conscience) make this pugnacious but really intricate spectacle an invisible vintage of your category.” [ 10 ]

Photograph have motion and you may anticipation, and specific brief touches out of humor to provide style. Expert activities because of the Dick Powell, as the a gaming house overseer, and you may Lee J. Cobb, as the a police inspector, as well as within the rating . Even though the spot observe a common development, the newest characterizations was new therefore the activities adequate in order to overbalance. Dialog is actually terse and topical, preventing the emotional, phoney reach. Strange digital camera angles show up on occasion so you can intensify attract and you can momentarily arrest the attention. Its primarily a question of enjoying Mr. Powell experience their paces smartly while you are a massive cast from actors and you can actresses promote your vintage support. Evelyn Keyes takes on the good nothing lady which brings out the fresh finest in him and you will Ellen Drew is the sleek and slinky vixen which will get your into the jams. Thomas Gomez is greasy as villain and you can Lee J. Cobb does a special ready journey since a tired police inspector whom eventually closes the outcome. A great deal of taking and you may smoking is carried out of the the worried.” [ twelve ]
